Millennials and Marketing — What do I Need to Know?
However successful your firm, if you can’t adapt to generational changes, you won’t stay in business much longer. To earn the respect and revenues of thousands of millennials, your marketing strategies must include:
Millennials have shown a commitment to stopping discrimination against people of all ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, abilities and religions. Marketing to millennials must thus be inclusive and demonstrate a commitment to egalitarianism. This means not only avoiding discriminatory language and stereotyping but also taking active steps to include as many people as possible. If you run a bakery, make it clear that you bake wedding cakes for all kinds of couples. If you use video marketing, provide subtitles in as many languages as possible. No customer should feel left out.
It’s called the “Facebook generation” for a reason. If your company doesn’t have Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Pinterest accounts, you’ll be invisible to a huge portion of the market. Not only does social media allow you to advertise your business, but it is also an easy source of contact, location and payment information.
Social (and Personal) Participation
Advertising pre-set products isn’t going to cut it with millennials. To the extent that it is possible in your field, give customers an active role in designing or modifying products. If you sell T-shirts, create a feature on your website that allows customers to choose the shirt’s color, design and cut. Customers can also participate on a collective or social level. For example, if you own a restaurant and want to add new menu items, create an online survey to see what kinds of foods customers would like to try, and adopt the most popular suggestions.
Growing up with the Internet has taught millennials how to research and compare multiple brands, switching their shopping habits whenever social convention or technological change prompts them. To keep them loyal, research social, economic and technological trends, make detailed plans to adapt to those trends, and explain to customers how you plan to upgrade your products in the future. The more up-to-date and innovative you seem, the less likely millennials are to leave you for a trendy competitor.
